Jewish American Literatue - 2224 Words

Jewish American Literature â€Å"Duty Matters† Throughout the course of the semester, the concept of duty has been a major theme in various novels, such as in Anzia Yezierska’s Bread Givers, Cynthia Ozick’s The Shawl, and Saul Bellow’s Herzog. Although Yezierska, Ozick, and Bellow offer different circumstances, they all suggest a sense of responsibility from parent to child. I will show how the relationship between Sara and her father in Bread Givers differ from Rosa and the living incarnation of her daughter in The Shawl and Herzog’s fight to gain custody of his daughter June in Herzog. They are all significant in understanding the parent-child commitment in Jewish American families. According to these three novels, parents are obligated to their children – parents must give emotional support as well as security to them. According to Norman Soloman’s Judaism: A Very Short Introduction, the idea of duty is an act when one is obligated to carry out as well as a feeling of responsibility. In Judaism, a mans duties are defined by Gods commandments. One must decree to the Torah, the first five books of the Bible as a guide to holiness. The complete theological idea of a mans role in life is comprised within the notion of mitzvah, which means â€Å"duty†. The term á ¸ ¥ovah, denotating â€Å"obligation† or â€Å"duty† is also used the same as mitzvah. To complete a divine commandment is to satisfy ones duty. In these three novels, duty is the chief reason for the actions of these characters.

Nike Vs. Under Armour - 941 Words

Nike and Under Armour are two of the biggest brands in the active wear industry. Fitness goers of all ages and genders are passionate users of their sports gear and athletic clothes. Two print advertisements from Under Armour and Nike will be analyzed based on the way they use goals to captivate the viewers attention and elicit an emotion to persuade the viewer to buy their athletic wear. In a world that is quickly becoming aware of its health problems consumers are becoming more aware of fitness brands and their advertisements. People are taking an active stand in achieving their fitness aspirations and doing so with the best equipment available. Nike’s famous â€Å"Just do it† slogan has been a boost for the company’s reputation and notoriety, by setting it a part from other brands. The two advertisements from Nike and Under Armour are representations of current consumer ambitions towards fitness. Since their products promote the goal of having an active and fi t lifestyle it is clear that the advertisements are targeting young women who are interested in getting involved in working out. The audience is young women due to the use of women in the advertisements. It is easier for a viewer to feel connected to an image when they see someone that is similar to them portraying their goals. If a viewer sees someone similar in age to him or her trying to achieve the same goal they have, they will be more motivated to go after the goal themselves. Group engagement theory This model explains why and how procedural justice shapes cooperation in groups, organizations and societies. Organizational justice enhances employee trust, which in turn stimulates the display of citizenship behavior. † Assumption Analysis Several assumptions are identified in the analysis of this paper. This paper assumes that self – interest motives favor equity and people across different age groups, genders, races and education levels will perceive justice similarly (which might not be necessarily valid). Another underlying assumption in the managerial activities is that decision makers will treat the employees with genuineness while undertaking the recommended measures, because the absence of the sincerity will make the employees feel disrespected and manipulated. The influence of different contexts plays a key role in organizational justice as it will affect one’s justice perceptions. Out of all the variables, gender and culture are the main factors. Studies have shown that male’s major concern in reward allocation was protecting their own interests while females’ interests lie on maintaining the welfare of all group members. Furthermore, in a society with emphasis on collectivism, members emphasized more on particularistic principle of need or social status distribution instead of equity, as compared to societies based on individualism. Conclusions, Implications and Consequences This article has provided a detailed understanding of organizational justice. In conclusion, injustice in an organization will create problems, leading to inefficiency and unproductivity while justice acts will provide excellent business opportunities and maintain respect and trust within organizations.
